Deepening Due Diligence: Navigating human rights risks in extended supply chains
Organized by:
  • Pillar Two

  • Global Business Initiative on Human Rights

Please note, this session is for business participants only. Pre-registration is required.

Background

As global supply chains become increasingly complex and changeable (including due to trade disputes, conflicts and other geopolitical factors), legislative requirements (including in Asia) and broader stakeholder expectations for businesses to conduct human rights due diligence (HRDD) beyond their immediate suppliers are growing. This includes businesses identifying, preventing, mitigating and accounting for adverse human rights impacts deeper in the supply chain, where their visibility and leverage are often limited.

The aim of this workshop is to provide a practical, scenario-based experience that enables business to explore, in an interactive setting, the challenges and opportunities of implementing HRDD beyond Tier 1 suppliers.  It will focus on key issues aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, such as how businesses can gain visibility of their suppliers beyond Tier 1, build and use leverage in situations where they do not have direct contractual relationships, how they can meaningfully engage affected stakeholders and communicate more broadly about their actions throughout the due diligence process. These issues will be explored through a scenario-focused on labour rights risks and impacts on supply chain workers at Tier 2 or below. Importantly, the scenario will consider the issue from a range of stakeholder perspectives in addition to the business viewpoint. Following the scenario, participants can share their own experiences, including different approaches and challenges, in a facilitated discussion.

Key Objectives
  • Facilitate peer learning and exchange of good practices through scenario-based discussion and real-world reflections.

  • Explore and assess the likely effectiveness of practical strategies for conducting HRDD beyond Tier 1, including how businesses can build and exercise leverage to influence supplier practices.

  • Discuss approaches for effective stakeholder engagement, including engagement with rights holders that may be at risk, as well as those may be vulnerable or marginalised.

Format
  • Interactive scenario-based workshop for business

  • 90 minutes
