Corruption drives human rights abuses, including forced labour and denial of essential services. Despite growing uptake, HRDD often overlooks corruption risks. This session explores anti-corruption through a Human Rights-Based Approach, aligning HRDD and business integrity for responsible business.

Overview

Corruption is not a victimless crime. It deprives individuals and communities of essential services, economic opportunities, protection, and access to justice. This rights-based perspective demonstrates why anti-corruption must be integrated into Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD). Despite wider HRDD adoption, labour and environmental abuses persist because corruption undermines governance systems designed to protect workers and communities. Drawing on case studies, corporate practices, and data-driven insights, this session explores how bribery, falsified reporting, weak compliance, unethical recruitment, compromised procurement, unsafe workplaces, and ineffective grievance mechanisms enable human rights harms. It will present an HRDD framework and will examine how governance, policies, and tech-enabled grievance systems can strengthen accountability, risk management, and resilient supply chains.

Why it matters

The central role of Human Rights Due Diligence is shaping risk environments, and anti-corruption remains inadequately integrated into HRDD Frameworks, leaving a critical blind spot in how organisations assess and mitigate human rights risks.
